1st European Workshop on Technology and Knowledge Generated by Astrophysics

During Knowledge Cities World Summit 2018, celebrated in Tenerife, Humboldt Cosmos Multiversity was also part of the 1st European Workshop on Technology and Knowledge Generated by Astrophysics. Organized by the Canary Islands Astrophysics Institute (IAC), the event counted with the support of the Incycle Foundation and Cabildo de Tenerife.

The summit, that was held in the IAC’s headquarters, in La Laguna was a unique forum of debate in which the attendants were able to discover and share new strategies and best practices on knowledge transference.

Rafael Rebolo, Director of the IAC highlighted the support of the institution on knowledge transference as a way to benefit the society and contribute to the dinamization of the Islands’ economy. “IACTec -one of the IAC’s spin-offs- will serve as a support to all those interested in ideas which can be made effective, and from that point we are encouraging our research personnel to get involved in the process. Anselmo Sosa, IAC’s Office of Institutional Projects Manager added that “one of the most valuable resources that we have here at the IAC is the accumulated knowledge of research and technology which we generate in our field”.

Humboldt Cosmos Multiversity President, Günter Koch, on behalf of the World Capital Institute (WCI) also attended to this seminar. Dr. Koch stressed the potential and the opportunities present for scientific and technological companies that the Canary Islands offers. He also used the figure of Alexander von Humboldt as an example of this opportunities; a scientist, a researcher, but also a humanist, who started his journey here, in Tenerife.

The meeting counted with five professionals in Astrophysics who had made their careers with links and synergies with other sectors:

  • Paola Sestito, a systems engineer who worked in the sector of scientific instrumentation.
  • Nick Cox, an engineer in research and development dedicated to the analysis of satellite images.
  • Ugur Ural, an analyst in research into the impact of climate change.
  • Javier Blasco, a data analysis expert.
  • And Rene Fassbender, the director general and founder of a data analysis company.

The event, coordinated by IAC’s researcher Ana Monrealallowed us to view the potential of astrophysical researchers in different disciplines, represented by climate change, the analysis of images of the Earth, and the design of scientific instruments, among others. Pablo Redondo, IACTec’s Technical Manager, and co-organizer of the workshop added that the debate on how this potential can help the Island’s economy to create more employment needs from more ideas, opening the door to push it forward in future IACTec’s events and seminars in the upcoming months.
